Labor claims mass exodus of ‘high achieving’ teachers under Scott Morrison

Too many “high achieving” teachers are leaving the profession while not enough are replacing them – all under Scott Morrison’s watch, says shadow Education Minister Tanya Plibersek.

It comes as Labor unveils its plans to improve education in Australia.

“The result of that is a continued slide in our international testing results,” Ms Plibersek said at a media conference on Monday.

Ms Plibersek said Labor has a plan to counter the “massive” teacher shortage across the nation.

“First of all, by offering … up to 5,000 bursaries to attract those high achievers into teaching degrees,” she said.

“Secondly by making it possible for career changes … to go from other areas where they are achieving professionally, going into teaching.

“Thirdly, to respond to elements of the Quality Initial Teacher Education Review.”
