Defence spending ‘needs to lead somewhere’: Albanese

Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese says “spending billions to rip up contracts and blindside our allies” is “no way to enhance our security”.

The comments came in Mr Albanese’s budget reply speech on Thursday night.

“In this increasingly uncertain and unstable world, we will need to increase Australia’s defence spending,” he said.

“But that spending needs to lead somewhere; it needs to actually improve technology and capabilities and deliver them when they are needed.”

He said as part of Labor’s plan, he will ensure veterans “get the care they need” by “cutting waiting times for claims and rolling out new veterans hubs across the country”.
